Hi @vener,
This is a really thoughtful setup idea. I think I understood the scenario here but feel free to correct me if I misunderstood anything.
Here’s the simple breakdown:
-
Pickaxe won’t automatically switch models (like GPT → Claude) when someone upgrades
-
The upgrade system works by unlocking access to different Pickaxes, not changing what’s inside an existing one
So when a user upgrades:
-
They get access to new (premium) tools
-
The original tool stays the same with its original model and setup
An easy way to think about it:
-
Free users → Tool A (GPT-5 Nano)
-
Paid users → Tool B (Claude Opus)
You’re not upgrading the same tool, you’re giving access to a better version of it
How you can set this up:
-
Create a free version of your tool with a lighter model
-
Duplicate it and set the premium version with Claude Opus
-
Lock the premium version within Portal.
-
Guide users to upgrade when they want better results or hit limits.
-
You can also use the new feature to lock specific tools or folders and present upgrade options directly in your portal:

This approach usually ends up being cleaner for users as well, since the difference between free and premium is very clear.
I hope this helps.
