🚀 Claude Opus 4.6 is now live on Pickaxe

You may have seen the announcement making the rounds today. Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.6, and we’ve already added it to Pickaxe so builders can start experimenting right away.

If you like Claude for its reasoning depth, writing quality, and ability to follow nuanced instructions, Opus 4.6 brings even more of that to the table. It works especially well for long-form writing, complex logic, and tools where tone and clarity really matter.

How to use it

Claude 4.6 Opus

  • Open the Pickaxe Builder

  • Go to the model dropdown under your prompt

  • Select Claude 4.6 Opus

  • Save and test as usual

No extra setup needed.

What this means for Pickaxe builders:

You can build tools that handle bigger documents, longer conversations, and more complex workflows, without the model losing the plot halfway through. It’s also a great fit for “knowledge work” Pickaxes like research assistants, finance and analysis helpers, document drafting, and anything where accuracy across lots of context really matters.

As always, we’d love to hear how it performs for your use case. If you notice strengths, quirks, or have comparisons with other models, drop them in the replies. Your feedback helps other builders and helps us too.

Happy building :rocket:

Claude Opus 4.6 has the same base token cost as 4.5. This makes 4.6 a no brainer upgrade for any of your Opus 4.5 pickaxes. From what I have seen, 4.6 is better across the board with no downsides compared to 4.5.

The one thing to keep in mind is the larger context window is more expensive. Opus 4.6 has a million token context window (compared to 200k in Opus 4.5). If you go over 200k tokens, the cost for input tokens doubles from $5/m to $10/m. The cost for output tokens also goes from $25/m to $35/m.

I don’t see this as a cost increase but rather a new feature at a premium price. Sonnet 4.5 had a beta context window that went to 1 million tokens with a similar price jump.

Remember Pickaxe allows you to set the size of the context window so you can limit your pickaxes to 200k and not get any price increase. Back in 2024 we wouldn’t have believed 200k tokens as a low context window.

I’ve been personally testing Opus 4.6 over the last week and I really like it.
