I hear you! But, here’s the truth. According to our data, the new system costs more than the old for about 30 of our more than two thousand active users. Almost everyone on the platform is getting more usage now than they did before. For the handful of users who are paying more now, they were being subsidized by our old system in a way that was unfair to all our other users, and we’ve put a stop to that.
That being said, we’re happy to suggest ways to right-side costs. The simplest one is to adjust your model choice. The second simplest is to charge your users more.
Beyond that, you can always decrease memory buffer, decrease output token limit, or otherwise decrease the amount of tokens used in each generation. We’re about to launch a feature that makes it much more clear how many “thinking” tokens your generations use, which is a big driver of costs.
We hear your concerns and we’d really like to help you succeed on Pickaxe. The best way for us to help would be for you to book a call with a member of the team or attend our office hours. We’re on the same team, and we’d genuinely love to jump on and help you optimize costs.
Unfortunately Pickaxe is changing the terms of the LTD if they are removing the ability to BYOK for Tier 3 users in April. Abhi you replied to siderick with ‘“Monthly credit limits are based on GPT4 and subject to change based on costs of newer versions.” I’m not sure what monthly credits have to do with the BYOK as someone using their own key are using their own credits and there is no AI token cost to Pickaxe. It’s such a shame to see that the original deal is not being honored.
I want to reassure you that nothing is being taken away unfairly. My earlier point about monthly credits was only explaining that all model usage runs through the same security and tracking system, which is why the update applies to every tier.
Think of it this way. Earlier, you had to take your car to another place to fill it up. Now the exact same fuel, at the same price, from the same provider, is filled for you automatically. Nothing about your car changes and nothing about your tank changes. We simply improved how it gets refilled. Your cost stays the same because the fuel provider still charges based on how much you use.
It would only be a violation if we changed the fuel, changed the price, or limited your ability to use your own car, and none of that is happening. In fact, we keep upgrading the car itself. We add new and better AI models within minutes of their launch because we genuinely want users to have world-class tools and we want you to succeed.
Additional context: Many people had trouble keeping their own API keys active. If someone forgot to top up their OpenAI or Gemini balance or let their key expire, their Pickaxe stopped working. In many cases they were serving their own clients, so one expired key affected multiple people, and Pickaxe got blamed even though we had no control over their billing. With the new system, at least we know the tank is always filled so no one gets stranded. The model provider still charges the same, and your tools keep running smoothly without interruption.

Enable auto-reload
When your balance falls below a certain amount, the system will automatically recharge your account with the custom amount you choose. You’re fully in control of how much gets added each time. You will see those options as you move through the next steps, and you can adjust the $ amount.

Wow It was. Very interesting to read how some users took this update and how the team at Pickaxe responded. At first I noticed the costs were pretty high, but. Switching the models. Did make it a lot cheaper. I’m actually very happy about. This new token based system because there are a handful of tasks that I can really use. Gemini 2.0, Flash 4, and even just today. I was thinking, wow, I have. Virtually unlimited usage of this. So I really think this update was overall. Great for all of us.
