Is Claude Really Expensive, Or Did I Do Something Wrong?

I’m getting billed about $40 by Claude every day or so at this point.

This only started happening recently.

I did recently switch one of our Pickaxes to the latest Claude model because I read it was more affordable (was previously using Sonnet 4.5). But that’s when it seemed to start going up which has me scratching my head.

The other weird thing is Pickaxe is reporting $600 in lifetime expenses with Claude, but the API billing in Anthropic only says $277 over last 30 days and then before that it was not much more (total is like $360)

What could be happening here? Any ideas of where else to look?

When sharing templates on Pickaxe, it doesn’t share your API keys too (like if connected through an action that’s connected to the pickaxe template you share)?

Hey @stephenbdiaz I won’t address the technicalities of how templates work, but maybe I can help you determine which model is better suited for your build. Also, it is fairly normal for Claude bills to be astronomical - especially if you’re maintaining a tool with many daily users. I’ve seen Opus bills upwards of $197K/month! But that client was using Opus/Claude Code CLI.
Opus and Sonnet are mainly intended for coding/agentic workflows. Haiku is great for retrieving data between agents/RAG scenarios - although it can be good for copywriting, unless you are using a Claude Skill MD to instruct it what to do, the costs can begin to go off the rails.

What is the function of the Pickaxe being driven by Haiku?

Mostly copywriting for this tool! I’d love to stay on claude as I like the output it produces writing-wise for this tool, but if I don’t need the latest model then I can change it no problem

What about reasoning? I have mine set to balanced, but would switching it to fastest be more affordable as well?

You don’t need reasoning for copywriting tasks. Unless you’re writing a thesis on mining asteroids :grin:

Reasoning is intended for complex tasks like math/STEM, coding, and tough logic.

If you are mainly doing copywriting, you should absolutely turn reasoning off or switch to the “Fastest” setting. Reasoning models cost more and eat up more tokens because of the hidden work they do to solve logic puzzles, which usually isn’t necessary for creative writing.

OpenAI charges a higher rate per token, but Claude is unique because the price on paper looks the same as the standard model even though the final bill is much higher. This happens because the reasoning model eats up a massive volume of tokens to think. For example, if you ask for a short paragraph, a standard AI might use 100 tokens to write it. The reasoning model could write 3,000 tokens of invisible notes to analyze the tone and structure first. You have to pay for all 3,000 of those hidden tokens, meaning the request costs thirty times more even if the price per token is exactly the same. Since you like the output for writing, the standard model will give you that same quality without the expensive overthinking.

Imagine you hire a chef to make a simple peanut butter sandwich. The standard model just slaps it together instantly, costing you pennies. The reasoning model, however, spends an hour measuring the bread’s density and calculating the optimal jelly trajectory before finally handing you the food. You get the exact same sandwich, but you are stuck paying for that hour of unnecessary intense calculation.

Okay that’s got to be it, my reasoning settings! It’s still weird how the cost on Pickaxe doesn’t align with the cost I’m seeing hit my payment method on file with Claude daily.

But my plan is to change reasoning to off on this one + refresh my token in case it got out there somehow and someone else is using it.

I also have copywriting pickaxes using Claude, and lately the prices have skyrocketed. I’m seriously thinking about what to do, because no other model writes as well as he does.

I managed to replace some pickaxes with Grok Fast, but I lost some quality.

I’ve been following the price shown in the model selection menu and it’s fluctuating a lot. Just two weeks ago it was at 0.32, and it has been going up a little every day. Today it reached 1.07 :open_mouth:

I’m trying to figure out if this is a Pickaxe issue or if this is Claude 4.5

I have found reasoning for Claude gets way better outputs.

But for the first time in history I ran out of credits since switching to the new Pickaxe billing system and I’m trying to understand if the model actually got expensive or if Pickaxe jumped their prices way up.

Here’s an easy way to picture it. Prices are shown per 100 messages. Imagine you take a short cab ride. If you go straight to the destination, the cost stays low. But if you keep asking the driver to stop for photos, wait, start again, stop again, the meter keeps running. More fuel, more time, higher cost. Actions in Pickaxe work the same way. Every extra step, webhook, or PDF generation adds more “stops” and uses more tokens. If a PDF or action is not really needed, you can drop it or charge users extra for that service. When the average user adds more steps, the overall price for that model goes up.

Pickaxe regularly calculates how many trips and stops each model is taking on average and adjusts the displayed price based on that. These prices come directly from the model providers, and we simply pass them through to you.

Choosing the right model and keeping prompts simple helps keep everything smooth, fast, and affordable.

A lot of people are asking the same question, so you’re not alone. When credits run out faster, it’s easy to think the model suddenly got more expensive or that Pickaxe changed pricing. In reality, the biggest cost driver is usually something fully in your control.

Your Role Prompt length plays a huge role in how many credits you burn.
Many users write long, essay-style Role Prompts. It’s easy to forget that the AI has to read that entire block of text from top to bottom every single time you send a message. Not just once. Every single message. So if the prompt is very long, the model processes a huge amount of tokens on every reply, and your credits disappear much faster.

AI models don’t charge “1 message = 1 credit.” OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, all of them charge based on tokens. This is not a secret; you can cross-check it. More text processed means more cost. Pickaxe simply passes that through.

The good news is you actually have full control here.
If you keep your Role Prompt clean, simple, and short, the model has far less to read, and your credit usage drops immediately.

To be clear: this is almost certainly not a Pickaxe price jump. It’s just how the model billing works. You can even cross-check the token pricing directly with the model provider.

Whenever I try to put knowledge instructions in the knowledge base it fails.

Great question! Let me share a simple example. It shows how prompt length can quietly multiply your credit usage, even when the task is very simple.

First things first: Your Role Prompt should not repeat what’s already stored in the Knowledge Base.

  1. Role Prompt = how the AI behaves
  2. Knowledge Base = what the AI knows

Both prompts below ask for the exact same thing:
“Write 3 email subject lines for a shoe sale.”

The only difference is how much text the AI is forced to read before it answers.

1. The Lean Prompt (cheap and efficient)

Prompt:
"Write 3 catchy email subject lines for a summer sneaker sale. 40% off. Urgent tone."

AI Result:

  1. Flash Sale: 40 percent Off Sneakers Ends Soon

  2. Your Summer Kicks Are 40 percent Off

  3. Last Chance to Save Big on Sneakers

Short input, low cost.

2. The Bloated Prompt (same result, 15x more expensive)

This is the kind of prompt many people put in their Role Prompt without realizing the cost:

Prompt:

"You are a world-class expert copywriter with 20 years of experience in the e-commerce fashion industry. You have worked for Nike, Adidas, and Puma. Your goal is to help me write high-converting email marketing copy that drives sales and engagement.

Please read the following instructions carefully. I need you to generate subject lines.

Here are the rules you must follow:

Do not use offensive language.

Make sure the tone is urgent but not spammy.

Ensure the discount is mentioned clearly.

Do not make the subject lines too long.

Use emojis if appropriate but not too many.

Focus on the summer season.

Here is the Context: We are a shoe company selling sneakers. We are having a summer sale. The discount is 40% off storewide. We want people to buy now.

Task: Based on the persona and rules above, please generate a list of exactly three (3) email subject lines for this campaign. Please ensure they are catchy."

AI Result:

  1. Flash Sale: 40 percent Off Sneakers Ends Soon

  2. Your Summer Kicks Are 40 percent Off

  3. Last Chance to Save Big on Sneakers

Same output. Much heavier input.

Why the long version burns credits

  • The AI already knows how to write subject lines. It doesn’t need a fictional résumé.

  • Repeating information adds cost without adding value.

  • Rules like “do not use offensive language” are unnecessary because modern models already avoid that.

Every word in your Role Prompt is a coin you are spending. If you can say it in 10 words, don’t use 100.

Important note for your own Pickaxe users:

The same rule applies to the people using your bots. If your end-users keep sending long, bloated queries, you get charged more while they likely receive the exact same output. You can control both input and output limits in the Configure tab to ensure users don’t burn through your credits unnecessarily.

The big problem is that I’ve been using Pickaxe since January, built a business with it based on January’s pricing… then one day I wake up and the billing model has changed and I’m spending 10x more doing the exact same things as before?? with no warning?? This was a disappointment.

The problem with this is if we have a more complex prompt say “writing a sales page” - you need to walk the Pickaxe step-by-step in the role section to write this properly.

Because the knowledge base is RAG, it doesn’t work nearly as well as putting a full system prompt for a specific component in there.
